Tired of Being Tired?

DAY 2 OF 6

The God Who Rests

From the first chapters of Scripture, we learn two interesting things about God.

First, God is creative. In Genesis, the first book of the Bible, we see He made something out of nothing by simply speaking it into existence. Everything we see around us is here because God created it.

Second, we learn that God rested. Six days of massive creation and then a day of rest. At first, it seems a little odd, doesn’t it? If God’s powerful enough to speak the universe into existence, surely He has the stamina to make it one more day. However, Isaiah 40:28 assures us that God didn’t rest because He was tired:

Have you not known?

Have you not heard?

The everlasting God, the Lord,

The Creator of the ends of the earth,

Neither faints nor is weary.

His understanding is unsearchable.

So, why would God rest if He wasn’t tired?

Quite simply, God modeled what we need to do. He showed us what a full week of work looks like—six days of work and a seventh day to rest. He showed us how to look back at our work and consider what He has done through us. God gave us permission to physically rest for a day by doing so Himself.

There must be a time when work stops so we have time for reflection and rest. In this period of rest, we can talk to God about the week. We can review what we’ve accomplished so that we know where we’re headed. We can think about what we’ve said and done. Our bodies can rejuvenate themselves like they were designed to!

Unlike God, we do get tired. We do need to rest. And our loving Creator showed us the right way to get it.

As you engage with God’s Word:

● How can I be more intentional to rest?

● What is God saying to me?

● How can I apply what God is teaching me?

● How can I be specific in prayer today?

After you reflect on these questions, bring everything to God in prayer.
