🍞 Why Does Jesus Talk About Bread So Much?
Have you ever wondered why Jesus spoke so much about bread? Growing up, I came to the conclusion bread must have been Jesus’ favorite food… He talked about it all the time! Yet, bread is actually a powerful concept first seen in the Old Testament book of Exodus. There we see God's supernatural, daily provision of manna—bread from Heaven—for the Hebrew people as they journeyed through a barren desert after leaving bondage in Egypt.
So what did Jesus mean when He said, “Give us this day our daily bread”?
I don’t think Jesus was just telling His disciples to pray for their daily food. In fact, in John 6 Jesus broadens the picture for us and says in verses 32-33: “Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
He goes on in verse 35: “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger…” In other words, Jesus was saying, “God is the Provider! I’m the bread. You feed on Me! There’s more to life than groceries and physical hunger.”
Throughout the Gospels, Jesus prioritizes spiritual food at least right on par with physical food. While we rarely neglect the physical, we often forget the spiritual—but the truth is we need both to live well. Daily strength comes from God’s Word and presence. God the Father serves the Bread on the table, but we must show up to the table and sit down to eat—choosing to connect with God daily by spending time with Him.
As you engage with God’s Word:
â—Ź What is God saying to me?
â—Ź What does it mean to me?
â—Ź How can I apply what God is teaching me?
â—Ź How can I be specific in prayer today?
