Anchorage: The Storm of Loss | Part 7 of 8Sample
The Powerlessness of Death
We often give death more credit than it is due in this world. Yes, it is scary because of its unknowable nature, but we as believers have hope; a hope that is beyond the grave. Through the storm of loss, cling to the promises of the One who has conquered death. Whether it is the loss of a loved one, or even if you have been handed a death sentence by the doctor, remind yourself of the powerful words of Paul.
"For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain." - Philippians 1:21
What a powerful message this delivers. Thinking of it in this context, that if you continue to live in this world it will be for the glory of God, but even if you were to die it is gain because you will go on to be with God and dwell in His presence, renders death defeated!
I'm reminded of a wonderful story shared by a pastor during the COVID-19 pandemic. His uncle was quite sick and had been hospitalized. With such times of uncertainty, one could receive bad news at any time. Because of this, he was prepared. Soon enough, his father called to share the news that his uncle had 'gone home.' As he recounted that moment, the pastor said he could do nothing but pause, struggling to comprehend what happened. Had his uncle recovered and gone back to his house, or had he died and gone to be with the Lord? He realized that in either case, he had gone home! This, indeed, is a blessed assurance!
Reflection
Remind yourself of this promise today: Death has no power. Victory over death is a promise to those whose hope is in Christ; not only His work on the cross, but the power of His resurrection. Let it be said that whether we live or die, Christ will be glorified.
