Put on All Your Armor: Pray in the Spirit
“Talk is cheap.” Words seem weak compared to knives and guns. Al Capone once said, “You can get more with a kind word and a gun than with a kind word.” And I suppose that’s why Christians don’t always take advantage of their privilege of prayer-it seems weak.
And yet, words addressed to an almighty God, through faith in Christ, access that almighty power. The Father loves to hear from His children, and He intervenes in our lives to shield us from Satan and his evil ones. You can’t resist Satan with a knife or a gun. Instead, you can call on God’s Spirit through prayer.
Does it surprise you that Paul lists prayer with the other armor and weapons in Ephesians 6:11,18, “Put on the full armor of God,” he says. “Pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.” Think of it-the Lord of the universe actually invites us to direct his formidable power to do things that make our lives better and safer, and to do the same for other people. He must really like us!
