God’s Promises for Families of Drug Addicts and Alcoholics

DAY 5 OF 7

God will give you (and your loved one) the grace necessary to endure all suffering.

Earlier we looked at the way God promises He will give us strength for every battle. Today we will discover how God promises us grace in our sufferings.

I will never forget how I felt complete misery during my husband’s active addiction. I truly believed this suffering we both felt was going to last forever and we would never get out of it.

The truth is that God’s grace restored and strengthened both of us, just like the promise we see in 1 Peter.

The book of 1 Peter is a letter written by Peter reminding Gentile Christians that they will endure sufferings but encouraging them that they are chosen by God and can place their HOPE in Jesus.

1 Peter 5:10-11 says,

“And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.”

It doesn’t say "if" you suffer; it says "after" you suffer. I love the truth that Peter speaks here. We will all suffer, life will be hard, and there will be trials in our lives.

But he doesn’t end there. He continues to say, “the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.” God owns ALL grace. It may not feel like we will ever see peaceful days, but one day God will restore everything to the way it is supposed to be in His eyes.

We are not meant to suffer alone. We need a community and a support group that understands what we are going through. We also have a loving God who wants you to cling to Him through your sufferings so He can give you the strength to get through each trial.

"But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me." 2 Corinthians 12:9

Today's Challenge

Strengthen your faith in God through your sufferings and allow God’s gentle hand of grace upon you.
