DAY 3 OF 5

Discovering Your People

At some point, most of us have felt a sense of unity, harmony, and oneness in a community, among a people group, or on a team. Much like the nation of Israel that was made up of twelve distinct and diverse tribes, the people of God have a tribal DNA.

There is a remarkable phenomenon in physics called resonance that explains the sense we have when we meet our people. Scientists tell us that all matter vibrates at specific frequencies. Resonance occurs when an object’s natural vibration frequency responds to an external stimulus of the same frequency. If you know an object’s natural rate of vibration, you can make it vibrate without touching it.

Although this term is sometimes used improperly, the accurate connotation of resonance is that we are feeling something or experiencing something in common with a certain person, people group, or revelation. It’s a connection we can’t completely explain.

The reason we seem to resonate at the same frequency with certain people is that we view the world through the same lens, and thus we value the same things. The prophet Amos, while delivering a message about God’s coming condemnation of the Israelites, put it like this: “Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?” (Amos 3:3 NKJV). God and Amos were in sync with one another: God did the punishing, and Amos told Israel it was Him doing it.

It’s not about you finding people who view the world from a right-or-wrong perspective as much as it is about finding natural kinships within a diverse world of tribes. Tribal diversity is illustrated beautifully in the parables of Jesus when He describes the various aspects of the Kingdom of God. In the same way that white light passing through a prism refracts to show the spectrum of color, Jesus revealed the multidimensional nature of the Kingdom through His “Kingdom parables” in the book of Matthew.

He highlighted the many aspects of God’s kingdom and the role its citizens play in society through these parables. Discovering which descriptions of the Kingdom you most resonate with and then finding others who resonate with the same aspects of the Kingdom will help you find your people.

Remember, success is often determined by being on the right bus with the right people who have a like passion and purpose.
