Mysteries Of Glory

DAY 5 OF 5

The Coronation of Mary The fifth mystery in this set is the Coronation of Mary as Queen of Heaven. Any title or story of Mary is open to challenges and suggestions that Catholics hold her as an equal of Jesus. This is to fundamentally misunderstand Catholic teaching. Jesus is the mediator of God and men, Jesus alone is Lord, Jesus alone is our Saviour. However, God chooses to work through humans to proclaim and bring his Kingdom into being, and so it is with Mary. Mary is the most perfect example of discipleship and has been rightly honoured since the beginning of our church. This honouring though always leads us towards her Son, just as He always leads us to our Father in heaven. It is useful to read a couple of sentences from paragraph 61 of ‘Lumen Gentium,’ one of the fundamental teaching documents of the Roman Catholic Church, which states – ‘the Blessed Virgin was on this earth, the virgin Mother of the Redeemer, and above all others and in a singular way the generous associate and humble handmaid of the Lord. She conceived, brought forth, and nourished Christ. She presented Him to the Father in the temple and was united with Him by compassion as He died on the Cross. In this singular way she cooperated by her obedience, faith, hope, and burning charity in the work of the Saviour in giving back supernatural life to souls. Wherefore she is our mother in the order of grace.’ When we read the section from the Book of Revelation, we note that this text is very open to interpretation. The woman mentioned could be Mary, could be the Church or could be Israel. For today though, let us consider the profound truth that God chooses to work through humans to bring about His Kingdom. The fact that he might choose you and me is one of the most profound and yet liberating truths of our faith. We should honour the service and witness of those who have gone before us and inspired and guided by their actions and words, step forward to play our part in His glorious Kingdom. Again, take some time repeating a simple prayer over and over as you reflect.
