DRAWN OUT OF THE WATER
Moses was born to parents from the house of Levi, which eventually became the priestly family for Israel. After three months, Moses’ mother placed him in a basket to protect him from murder at the hands of Pharaoh. Like the ark that protected Noah, this small basket sustained Moses until Pharaoh’s daughter found him. The daughter was ill-equipped to nurse a baby, so she called a Hebrew woman, the mother of Moses, to nurse the child. Miraculously, God provided deliverance for the baby, but he did so through the very one who tried to destroy him. Moses was adopted by Pharaoh’s daughter and was raised in Pharaoh’s house. Moses’ Egyptian name means “is born,” which sounds like the Hebrew for “draw out,” thus testifying to God’s deliverance of his ordained leader from the waters of the Nile.
In a similar fashion, God protected Jesus at the outset of his ministry from the hand of Herod, who wanted to destroy any threat to his throne by killing all Jewish boys two years old and under (Mt 2:13 – 16). Like Moses, Jesus was delivered by God from the enemy and was positioned to fulfill God’s appointed plan for his life.
Jesus, looking back through history, it is so easy to see your hand in everything. Clearly, you orchestrate events for your purposes. Give me the same confidence in the events of my life, even if I can’t yet clearly see your hand. Amen.
