SOWING THE WIND
Hosea 8 references sowing and reaping. It is used as an image of judgment: the people have rebelled (“sow the wind”) and will therefore experience judgment (“reap the whirlwind”). Under the law, Israel was to repent and follow God’s every command in order to receive his blessing. But the never-ending cycle of failure and repentance persisted, for who could perfectly live up to the law? What is done in selfishness and sin will always reap death and ruin.
But Christ’s work on the cross enables all people to choose to live, or “sow,” Spirit-filled lives. Galatians 6:7 – 8 outlines this principle: “A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.” When followers of Jesus walk with the Holy Spirit and live intentional lives for God, the natural overflow will be lives that yield a righteous and blessed harvest and impact God’s kingdom for all eternity.
Jesus, I want to sow a Spirit-filled life. Please help me to live intentionally for you, fully surrendered to your Spirit, so I may reap good things for your kingdom. Amen.
