The Jesus Bible Reading Plan

DAY 249 OF 365

THE JUDGMENT SEAT

At the judgment seat, Jesus will evaluate the faithfulness and work of each believer as Paul explained in 1 Corinthians 3:13 – 15. One must be careful to recognize that the works evaluated at the judgment seat do not determine an individual’s eternal salvation. That issue is resolved solely by the redeeming work of Jesus Christ at the moment the believer places their faith in Christ, and it is validated at the great white throne as believers’ names are found written in the book of life (Rev 20:15). In contrast, the judgment seat provides opportunity for Christ to evaluate the faithfulness of each believer. Those who invested in the kingdom of God will receive rewards from Christ, while believers who wasted their opportunities will “suffer loss” (1Co 3:15).

While Scripture is not specific about the timing of the judgment seat, it does indicate that believers will be judged and rewarded at the time of Christ’s second coming and the resurrection of the dead (Lk 14:14; 1Co 4:5).

The nature of the rewards distributed at the judgment seat is not clear. Several New Testament passages refer to “crowns” as rewards (1Co 9:25; 1Pe 5:4). Revelation 4:10 explains that these crowns will ultimately be laid at the feet of Jesus. The parable of the minas in Luke 19:11 – 27 suggests that the rewards could also include the opportunity to serve and to govern in eternity. In any event, the Bible indicates that eternal benefit will be bestowed at the judgment seat.

In light of the knowledge that believers will one day stand before the judgment seat of Christ and be rewarded for their faithfulness in life, it is important for all of those who call Jesus Lord to be diligent to their calling to bring him glory in all things, including their efforts to invest in the kingdom of God on earth. It is a privilege not to be ignored.

Jesus, I tremble at the prospect of standing before you one day. As I go about the mundane tasks of each day, help me to remember that this life will lead to that moment, and help me to live accordingly. Amen.
