The Jesus Bible Reading Plan

DAY 238 OF 365

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY

The description of the seraphim provides an image that shows how one is supposed to act in the presence of God. God is holy — altogether pure and without blemish or sin. He is spotless and perfect, and as such is set apart from everything that is not as holy as he is. The seraphim cover their faces because even though they are supernatural beings, they are evidently unworthy to look on God. The fact that they humbly cover their feet implies that they are created beings. When one realizes the immensity of God’s holiness, the only appropriate response is exactly what is described in this passage. (Read Isaiah’s response in v. 5.)

Believers who read this passage can get a glimpse of how intense and pure God’s holiness is. Likewise, God calls believers to be holy (1Pe 1:15 – 16). Once a person believes in God and who he says he is, they can begin to live a life empowered by the Holy Spirit, in accordance with his Word, and can join a community of imperfect people who have been set apart by God (1Pe 2:9). Although the struggle is real, believers can claim victory over sin through Christ’s death and resurrection. And, by setting themselves apart from this world and the sin that entangles it, believers take steps to one day be united with God in holiness (Heb 12:1 – 3).

Jesus, I praise you for your holiness. If there is anything unholy lurking in my life, please root it out and set me free of it. Amen.
