JUSTICE FOR THE POOR
Jesus is the justice for the poor that the psalmist, possibly David, wrote about here. Throughout Jesus’ teachings there is constant mention of the poor and Jesus’ intention of saving them. Luke 4:18 says, “He has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.” Jesus told the rich young man that if he wanted to inherit eternal life, he had to “go, sell everything you have and give to the poor” (Mk 10:21). And in the parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus showed how in order to be obedient to God and a good neighbor, one must help those in need (Lk 10:25 – 37). Indeed, what the psalmist wrote in Psalm 140 was confirmed through Jesus and is continuing to come true today. Jesus used his ministry to show how important the poor are to God, and he encouraged believers to treat the poor as he treated them — with love and care.
Jesus, thank you for caring about every person, regardless of economic status. Please help me to see others through your eyes and to show compassion, patience and generosity toward those in need. Amen.
