Art is essential!

God believes this so much that he not only creates art himself but also divinely inspires it.

God never intended art to be useless or frivolous. God intended art to be central to his creation and vital to our collaboration with him.

There was a time when God pulled Moses aside on Mount Sinai to imaginate. The Israelites were in the desert after having escaped from Egypt. God wanted to establish the laws and customs for this wandering nation. A major part of this vision included building the first house of worship, the tabernacle, where God promised to dwell.

Now, just like if you were the one meeting with an architect and builder to design and construct your home, this was a really big deal to God. God wanted his home to be perfect. God didn’t want any low-quality materials to be used. He didn’t want the builders to cut any corners or hurry the job with any boring pre-fab pieces.

But he didn’t want to do all the work himself either. As is his usual style, he wanted to accomplish his plan through a collab with humans.

So it is deeply significant that we are told about Bezalel and Oholiab in today’s verses.

These two guys with crazy names were in collaboration with the Divine.

God chose them to create something for him.

God contracted and commissioned them to create a work of art.

And not just any art. To create his tabernacle.

His dwelling place.

The home of God on earth.

A place for God to live…with us.

God with us.

Because he wants to collab.

Creatively.

Bezalel was filled with the Spirit of God…to make artistic designs…

What? How incredible is that!

God says art is divine.

Art is supernatural.

Art is inspired.

Art comes from God.

Art is an expression of God.
