How to Deal With Jealousy in a Christian Marriage

DAY 2 OF 5

Being Mindful

There is a proper kind of jealousy, a proper kind of watchfulness, protectiveness, care, and concern that belongs to the realm of what is right, holy, fitting, and good. In the bonds of marriage, there is this same sort of thing.

A marriage is a covenant—a commitment built on the foundations of trust, love, and respect. In order for a marriage to function properly, we need all of the components to be in their right place and working properly.

When we know our spouse, and we know them to be godly people, honest and secure people, and they start showing concern regarding our relationship with someone of the opposite sex, we should respect that. We need to protect our marriage commitment above any other relationship. We cannot forget the fact that the enemy is eager to kill, steal, and destroy things.

Marriage is between a man and a woman, joined together, as one. It is right for a husband or wife to be bothered by someone flirting with their spouse. It is right that husbands and wives help and encourage each other to be wise and mindful about their interactions with members of the opposite sex. Husbands and wives should be diligent in guarding their marriage and the marriage bed, which is holy. These are healthy kinds of protectiveness, care, and concern.

We need to have more conversations, spend more time together, and trust one another more. We need to spend time praying for each other and time praying together. We need to be less afraid to ask questions that will contribute to a healthy relationship, like: “So, where have you been today?” or “Who did you spend time with?” A healthy marriage relationship requires accountability. It should not make us uncomfortable to be held accountable for what we did today.

Are you being mindful of your spouse when you interact with people of the opposite sex? Do you think you need to change certain things in your behavior in order to better protect your marriage?

About this Plan

How to Deal With Jealousy in a Christian Marriage

In the Old Testament, God describes himself as a jealous God. In other places in the Scriptures, human jealousy nearly always appears sinful. Can jealousy ever be a good thing for people to have? Can a husband or wife have good and right jealousy for their spouse?
