DAY 3 OF 21

Will you choose truth?

What is truth? People have asked this question for thousands of years. Entire philosophies are centered on and around this question. In fact, it is the question Pilate asked of Jesus right before he was crucified, “What is truth?” And yet, Truth was standing right before him.

The Greek word for “truth” is aletheia, which literally means to “un-hide” or “hiding nothing”. It gives the idea that truth is always there, always open and evident for all to see. The Hebrew word for “truth” is emeth, which means “firmness, consistency and lasting”. From that came the English word truth, believed to be a derivative of the word “tree,” something we consider to be solid, firm-rooted and alive.

Truths are based on standards for comparison. It matters in house building, recipes, and mathematics. Truth matters especially in life.

We need a basis for belief, or we will believe anything. If there isn’t a standard, our beliefs change to match the culture.

There must be a greater standard. One that is correct and certain for us to live by. Without that standard, we are left to invent our own opinions that will change over time because of our own desires. This is called relative truth. Our choices don’t need to be compared to others. Others aren’t our measure.

I personally believe that the Bible is the basis, the measure for all truth. I believe it is solid like a tree, tested, and teaches us to have objective thoughts. I believe its words are true and it provides a standard by which to measure all our thoughts and actions. Truth does not change. It is an absolute and remains true, even if not everyone agrees. I encourage you to have that same belief----but it is your choice.

Choose the Bible as the standard of belief, or you will choose whatever you desire in the moment.
