The Genealogy of JesusSample

The Genealogy of Jesus

DAY 20 OF 21

The story of David and Bathsheba is one of the most well-known stories in the Old Testament. As a consequence of David’s sin, God did not let their first child live. Solomon was the second-born child of David and Bathsheba. He was the child promised to David as one who would build a house for God.

As Solomon began to rule Israel, he asked God for the gift of wisdom. Things seemed hopeful – perhaps this third king of Israel would not fail like his father or Saul. But, despite Saul asking God for wisdom, he still failed. Israel needed a King to follow the laws of God and not drive them towards moral ruin. That King would come through the line of Solomon to a young virgin.

The true King of Israel came to Solomon’s direct descendant – Mary in Nazareth. He was the true wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:24). Solomon points toward his divine descendant through a contrast: His failing and sinful wisdom contrasted with Christ’s perfect wisdom. In Jesus, something greater than Solomon had come – the True King and perfect wisdom from above.

  1. Have you acknowledged your sinful wisdom to God and trusted Him for His perfect wisdom?
  2. How has Jesus exercised His Kingship in your life?

Prayer: Jesus, thank you for being the perfect King and perfect wisdom from God.

About this Plan

The Genealogy of Jesus

We often trace our history to unlock knowledge about ourselves and gain wisdom to move forward. The divine nature of Jesus certainly adds a one-of-a-kind dynamic to understanding His genealogy. Still, there is wisdom, depth, and importance to be gained in learning about the men and women God ordained as part of the family of Jesus.
