The Heart Of God

People read the Bible for many reasons. Some say it’s a book of guidelines, or it helps us stay free from sin, or it gives wisdom, or biblical direction for our decisions. The Word of God helps with all these and more. But underpinning them is that it helps us truly know God and His depth of love for us. It helps us understand His character and His heart. As we read the Bible in conjunction with the power of His Holy Spirit, it opens the eyes of our heart to connect with God intimately and eternally.

The Bible shows us God’s might and majesty and mercy. It helps us understand His heart. We get a deeper understanding of how merciful and just He is. We learn He is not quick to anger, but compassionate and forgiving (Psalm 103:8). The Bible shows us God’s perfection, purity and sovereignty.

But also, reading the Bible helps transform our hearts because it helps us grasp how much God loves us. From beginning to end, we see God’s love for you and me. Through His actions and commands, we see His deep, unending love for us. We see the lengths He went to to draw us closer to Him; He sent His only Son to die for us. As the Holy Spirit gently reveals God’s heart to us through His Word, our heart aligns to His. His desires become our desires. His will becomes our will. And we fall deeper and deeper in love with the One who loves us for all eternity.
