Ask Seek Knock - Sermon on the MountSample
Jesus often told stories to teach people about God’s Kingdom. These stories are called parables. In Luke 18, we read Jesus’ story about the persistent widow. Sometimes Jesus’ parables take a little bit of digging to discover the lesson He was teaching, but in this story the Bible tells us exactly what it is. Jesus told his disciples a story. He wanted to show them that they should always pray and not give up.
The widow came day after day to the judge, pleading him to make things right for her. Being a widow meant her husband had died and she had no one to protect her and care for her, so she needed the judge to intervene in her situation. Day after day she came to the judge, and he kept sending her away without helping her. The woman would not give up; she kept coming back until the judge finally said, “I don’t care about what people think, I don’t even care what God thinks, but this woman keeps coming every day to bother me, so I will set things right for her. Who knows what she’ll do if I don’t answer her!”
When God’s people call out to Him, He hears them. Even the unfair judge made things right, and God will make things right for His people. God won’t delay, He will step in right on time. Keep knocking—be like the widow who didn’t give up. In His sermon on the mountainside, Jesus taught His followers about God’s Kingdom, He taught that we should ask and it will be given, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be open to you. God is more kind than that unfair judge; He will hear our prayers and He will make things right. Pray continually and don’t give up.
