Play Your Game
Do you like your forehand or backhand better? Are you a net player or do you prefer the baseline? Do you try to “get in” and volley or hang back and stay steady? Do you have a lob or a service game you can count on? Knowing the strengths of your own game builds confidence.
When I first started playing tennis, Coach Tim helped me learn that I am an offensive player. I liked to come in and volley early. I also had a steady first serve. Other players had different strengths and styles. I had the most success playing to my strengths and not focusing on my opponent’s game. Of course, in most matches, you must make adjustments. Play your game, get the next ball back, and stay steady.
Job knew how to play his game and hold on to his faith when influenced by others. He stayed faithful and loyal to God when his own family and friends tried to bring him down. Job knew who he was and put his trust in God. (Job 42:7) John the Baptist also knew what his “game” was all about. “John himself was not the light; he was simply a witness to tell about the light.”(John 1:8-9). John shared “his game” when he shouted to the crowds, “This is the one I was talking about . . . someone is coming after me who is far greater that I am, for He existed long before me.”
Both Job and John knew their games and stayed steady. They knew whose they were and who they were. God had specific plans and purposes for them, and they did not waiver. He has the same intentions for you—unique plans and purposes for your life. You are unique, and so is your game.
I remember reading somewhere “do the day your way and be about your Father’s business.” In this world where social media can suffocate us with what everyone else is doing, it can be difficult to “play your way.” Remember these wise words shared in Jeremiah 1:5 “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, before you were born, I set you apart. . .” Although those words were meant for the prophet Jeremiah, reminding him that he was set apart as a prophet to nations, they also can encourage you that God knew you before He formed you and set you apart, appointing you for many roles, tasks, and even tennis matches.
“You are God’s own child. And since you are, God has made you his heir” (Gal. 4:7). Know your own strengths. Be confident in who you are as a person and as a player. Enjoy playing your own game, each day, your way as you follow His lead.
