40 Faces, 40 Places: A Devotional Journey

DAY 11 OF 40

Nat from London

Sometimes whole-life discipleship looks like speaking up for those who don’t have a voice.

The pandemic period was challenging for me in my work. I worked as a solicitor in the emergency services, and I didn’t see my colleagues for over a year.

Not being together in person made it difficult to share my faith and be salt and light in my work environment. However, I still found opportunities to serve. I ran quizzes and game afternoons for staff members and organized meet-ups in the park when the regulations relaxed during the summer.

In light of the Black Lives Matter movement’s response to the events of summer 2020, including the murder of George Floyd, we also started a group seeking to have safe and open discussions about racial diversity and equality.

I made an effort to step up within the group and speak up on important issues. I know Jesus loves justice, we serve a God who cares about the oppressed and those who feel they don’t have a voice, so I think it’s important for me as a Christian to be part of the discussions and the groups seeking change in our workplace.

Being part of these groups meant I had the opportunity to share some of my Christian faith and perspective and hopefully be a real blessing to my colleagues.

Reflection

Amos 5:23-24 reminds us that our worship songs are on mute unless our whole lives are committed to God’s justice and righteousness.

It seems as though Nat approached this challenging season at work with a key question: ‘What good can I do today?’ She stepped into the opportunities God put before her, molding a collaborative team culture and using her voice on behalf of those whose voices weren’t being heard.

What good can you do today? Who do you know needs a bit extra of your time – and where can you use your voice to fight injustice?

Prayer

Lord, as Nat says, Jesus loves justice. Thank You for that truth. May my whole life worship be pleasing to You, Lord, and may my sung words match my frontline actions. Show me what good I can do for You and others today.
