Getting to Know the Prophets

DAY 19 OF 30

Zephaniah

As children and teenagers, many of us rebelled against the guidance and direction of loving parents. And, in doing so, we likely incurred some type of discipline or consequence. In the minor prophet book of Zephaniah, we see a similar situation.

Zephaniah was a prophet to the Southern Kingdom during the reign of the Judean king, Josiah, circa 630 BC. Like his ancestor, King Hezekiah, Josiah tried to turn the nation toward the Lord by destroying the idols and high places of pagan worship. Unfortunately, the people continued to live wicked, corrupt, and idolatrous lives. Thus, the Lord sent Zephaniah to warn them.

For those who were unrighteous, Zephaniah prophesied that Jerusalem, and the wicked nations surrounding it, would have the burning indignation of the Lord poured out on them.

But, just as a loving father has a purpose in discipline and correction, Zephaniah declared a promise of restoration for the nation in Zephaniah 3:9–20. They would become purified people, humbly walking with the Lord under His protection.

Zephaniah illustrates that while there is judgment, discipline, and consequence for rebellion against God, He is faithful to use it for purification and restoration.

1. Is there an area of your life in which you are currently rebelling or going against the Lord’s direction?

2. Read Proverbs 3:11. How have you experienced the Lord’s loving reproof lately?

Prayer: God, thank You for the times You have disciplined me and drawn me closer to You.
