Lent

DAY 39 OF 48

Grace and Truth

I love how the disciples were so human. Jesus was both grace-filled and honest about His disappointment in them. He cut to the chase with His frustration with them for not staying awake. But, He also spoke to the fact that this is something we will deal with as humans. So, I can relate when Jesus said, “The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

In the last couple of days, I have realized how easy it is to succumb to the desires of our “flesh.” Of course, it isn’t always the most extreme and sinful thing, but it’s sometimes simply choosing the “okay” option instead of God’s best for our life.

In following Jesus, I have realized that there aren’t always huge, life-altering decisions that prove my faithfulness. Instead, daily choices impact the relationship I have with the Father.

As we continue to walk in a relationship with Jesus, we get to learn how to hold the tension of grace and truth. We get to receive grace freely while also receiving the truth of what God has called us to. In daily decisions, we continue to choose Jesus right where we are.

Think: How do you see Jesus respond with grace and truth to the disciples? Where have you felt in your own life that “The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak”? How does this passage encourage or challenge you?

Pray: Today, ask that God would show you where you have succumbed to the desires of the flesh, accepting the “okay” instead of God’s best. Then, ask God to help you receive His grace in these situations.

Respond: What daily choices can you make this week to strengthen your relationship with Jesus? How can you hold grace and truth today?

About this Plan

Lent

For thousands of years, Christians worldwide have spent time preparing their hearts to celebrate Easter, eventually naming this season “Lent.” During the 40 days before the holiday, they would fast, pray, and spend extra time in the Scripture. We have developed this devotional as a tool to help you dig into the Bible this Lenten season and learn more about who Jesus is.
