Being Challenge Kids: An 11-Day Challenge to Be Like Jesus

DAY 3 OF 11

Habit 1: We Form Friendships

What’s your favorite subject in school? Do you know that there is something you are learning in school that is not science, spelling, reading, math, or other subjects? Research says that, for most children,1-3 hours of listening to the teacher teach is as much as kids can take in for a school day. For example, if you are in PreK, then the longest your brain can listen well, and focus is about 60 minutes per day.

But our school days are closer to 5-7 hours for most kids. So, what are you doing the rest of the time? Of course, you are at school to learn and study. No one would deny that. But besides all the subjects, you are learning something important. You are learning to interact and get along with other people. When you come to class, wait in line next to other kids, sit next to each other, help someone who is not getting it, play at recess, and learn alongside one another, you form friendships with your classmates and other kids.

It’s great to get along and to study hard, but if you cannot stand being around other kids or if you always get irritated at others, you are not reflecting God’s heart. Learning at school may take longer with groups, but this shows us that spending time doing things with people is worth it. Jesus shows us that it’s the best way to live our life!

We know it’s the best because Jesus chose us to be His friend. He wanted us to be in relationship with Him, even though it was a lot of work for him.

How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity! Psalm 133:1

It will take work. Sometimes you may have to put your ideas or plans aside to make room for others. But Jesus promises that it’s worth it! Unlike school, the lesson of forming friendships is one you will continue to study! You never graduate from forming friendships!

Challenge: Make sure everyone is treated fairly in your class, team, or club. Spend time with a friend or someone your age today. What did you do?
