Being Challenge Kids: An 11-Day Challenge to Be Like JesusSample
Habit 5: Jesus Chooses Church
When Neil Armstrong became the first person to step on the Moon, he famously said, “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” He knew that it took many small steps before he could reach the Moon. First, scientists had to do the math. Then, builders had to construct the rocket and lunar landing vehicle. So many small steps over years and years had to happen before Armstrong could step on the Moon. But the result was a giant leap in history.
Choosing church is a lot like that. Faithfully going to church, week after week, may not seem like a big deal. But the impact over time grows. The Holy Spirit is building something in you, week after week, and it’s changing your history. When you consistently take many small steps in your walk with Jesus, it adds up to one giant leap in your faith.
Small, smart choices add up. So many small steps equal one giant leap.
We go to church to learn more about God and who He is. We also go to church to be around other believers, serving and supporting them through tough times.
Did you know that Jesus went to church? When Jesus lived, the church looked different than it does today. Then, the church was called a temple a synagogue. Several Bible verses record that Jesus would visit the temple courts every day in His ministry. So going to church was a part of His life every single day.
Even though our church is different today than the one where Jesus gathered, church rightly performed today is still where the Good News of Jesus is taught and proclaimed. And those consistent small steps of often hearing the Good News of Jesus in our lives will cause your faith to erupt over time.
Remember, however, that you’ll not always be perfect in Choosing Church. Sometimes, we’ll choose other things that seem more exciting to us. What’s most important is that we know that Jesus always chooses us.
- He chose you when He became a baby and came to earth.
- He chose you when He was twelve and stayed behind to listen to teachers at the Temple.
- He chose you when He healed the sick and preached Good News.
- He chose you when He went to the cross and died for our sins.
- He chose you when He rose again and defeated death.
- He chose you at your baptism when you became part of God’s family.
Sometimes, it is not all about you. Always, it is about Jesus. Choose Church because God chose you.
Challenge: Invite someone to church—someone you know who does not attend church regularly. The only thing that might be keeping them from coming is an invitation!
