Know Your Identity in Him

Ephesians 1:18-19

I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.

Your identity is established upon the qualities, personality, beliefs, and traits that form the foundation of who you are and what you do. Your identity relates to your self-image and your self-esteem. From Genesis, we see the identity and security of Adam and Eve were established in what God said about them. They saw themselves as God saw them and spoke over them. Their purpose and meaning came from God alone, not their jobs, careers, family, or roles in the community. Once sin came in, that God-centered identity fractured and we allowed the shame of circumstances to determine who and what we are.

Having our identity and security in Christ is essential for our Christianity, and Paul addresses it in the book of Ephesians. The letter comes out of the heart of Paul that wants you to ‘know’ who you are (Ephesians 1-3) and in knowing who you are, allowing that knowledge to change the way you act in your relationships with one another and in your homes (Ephesians 4-6).

In Chapter 1 of Ephesians, Paul makes several declarations over who we are in Christ (in Him): We are blessed with every spiritual blessing, chosen, holy, blameless, redeemed. We must ‘know’ these things as truth so that they become our strength and foundation. The declarations are confident, current, and powerful. It’s not in him you will be, or in Him, you might be, it is in Him you are.

Knowing comes from the Holy Spirit revealing the truth, opening the eyes of your heart, and giving you a fresh revelation of who you are. When it comes to changing your identity, Paul prays that the Holy Spirit will give you the wisdom that will change your heart and what you believe so that what you ‘know’ becomes the revelation of God, not the revelation of the world (Ephesians 1:16-19). Prayer Point: I pray that the Holy Spirit will open my eyes so that I will know who I am in Him. I pray that as I read Ephesians 1, I will swap my identity and security in the things of this world to what is declared over me in the Bible.
