 <div class="label">2</div><div class="s1">Jesus Changes Water Into Wine</div><div class="p"> 1On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus&#8217; mother was there, 2and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3When the wine was gone, Jesus&#8217; mother said to him, &#8220;They have no more wine.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 4 &#8220;Woman, # 2:4 The Greek for Woman does not denote any disrespect. why do you involve me?&#8221; Jesus replied. &#8220;My hour has not yet come.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 5His mother said to the servants, &#8220;Do whatever he tells you.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 6Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.#2:6 Or from about 75 to about 115 liters</div><div class="p"> 7Jesus said to the servants, &#8220;Fill the jars with water&#8221;; so they filled them to the brim.</div><div class="p"> 8Then he told them, &#8220;Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.&#8221;</div><div class="p">They did so, 9and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10and said, &#8220;Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 11What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.</div><div class="p"> 12After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Clears the Temple Courts</div><div class="p"> 13When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. 15So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. 16To those who sold doves he said, &#8220;Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father&#8217;s house into a market!&#8221; 17His disciples remembered that it is written: &#8220;Zeal for your house will consume me.&#8221;#2:17 Psalm 69:9</div><div class="p"> 18The Jews then responded to him, &#8220;What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 19Jesus answered them, &#8220;Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 20They replied, &#8220;It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?&#8221; 21But the temple he had spoken of was his body. 22After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.</div><div class="p"> 23Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival, many people saw the signs he was performing and believed in his name.#2:23 Or in him 24But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people. 25He did not need any testimony about mankind, for he knew what was in each person.</div>

 <div class="label">4</div><div class="s1">Cain and Abel</div><div class="p"> 1Adam#4:1 Or The man made love to his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain.#4:1 Cain sounds like the Hebrew for brought forth or acquired. She said, &#8220;With the help of the Lord I have brought forth#4:1 Or have acquired a man.&#8221; 2Later she gave birth to his brother Abel.</div><div class="p">Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. 3In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. 4And Abel also brought an offering&#8212;fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, 5but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.</div><div class="p"> 6Then the Lord said to Cain, &#8220;Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? 7If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 8Now Cain said to his brother Abel, &#8220;Let&#8217;s go out to the field.&#8221;#4:8 Samaritan Pentateuch, Septuagint, Vulgate and Syriac; Masoretic Text does not have &#8220;Let&#8217;s go out to the field.&#8221; While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.</div><div class="p"> 9Then the Lord said to Cain, &#8220;Where is your brother Abel?&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;I don&#8217;t know,&#8221; he replied. &#8220;Am I my brother&#8217;s keeper?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 10The Lord said, &#8220;What have you done? Listen! Your brother&#8217;s blood cries out to me from the ground. 11Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother&#8217;s blood from your hand. 12When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 13Cain said to the Lord, &#8220;My punishment is more than I can bear. 14Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 15But the Lord said to him, &#8220;Not so#4:15 Septuagint, Vulgate and Syriac; Hebrew Very well; anyone who kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over.&#8221; Then the Lord put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him. 16So Cain went out from the Lord&#8217;s presence and lived in the land of Nod,#4:16 Nod means wandering (see verses 12 and 14). east of Eden.</div><div class="p"> 17Cain made love to his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city, and he named it after his son Enoch. 18To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech.</div><div class="p"> 19Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah. 20Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock. 21His brother&#8217;s name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play stringed instruments and pipes. 22Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged all kinds of tools out of#4:22 Or who instructed all who work in bronze and iron. Tubal-Cain&#8217;s sister was Naamah.</div><div class="p"> 23Lamech said to his wives,</div><div class="q1">&#8220;Adah and Zillah, listen to me;</div><div class="q2">wives of Lamech, hear my words.</div><div class="q1">I have killed a man for wounding me,</div><div class="q2">a young man for injuring me.</div><div class="q1"> 24If Cain is avenged seven times,</div><div class="q2">then Lamech seventy-seven times.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 25Adam made love to his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth,#4:25 Seth probably means granted. saying, &#8220;God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.&#8221; 26Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh.</div><div class="p">At that time people began to call on#4:26 Or to proclaim the name of the Lord.</div>

And he named them &#8220;Mankind&#8221;#5:2 Hebrew adam when they were created.</div><div class="p"> 3When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image; and he named him Seth. 4After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 5Altogether, Adam lived a total of 930 years, and then he died.</div><div class="p"> 6When Seth had lived 105 years, he became the father#5:6 Father may mean ancestor; also in verses 7-26. of Enosh. 7After he became the father of Enosh, Seth lived 807 years and had other sons and daughters. 8Altogether, Seth lived a total of 912 years, and then he died.</div><div class="p"> 9When Enosh had lived 90 years, he became the father of Kenan. 10After he became the father of Kenan, Enosh lived 815 years and had other sons and daughters. 11Altogether, Enosh lived a total of 905 years, and then he died.</div><div class="p"> 12When Kenan had lived 70 years, he became the father of Mahalalel. 13After he became the father of Mahalalel, Kenan lived 840 years and had other sons and daughters. 14Altogether, Kenan lived a total of 910 years, and then he died.</div><div class="p"> 15When Mahalalel had lived 65 years, he became the father of Jared. 16After he became the father of Jared, Mahalalel lived 830 years and had other sons and daughters. 17Altogether, Mahalalel lived a total of 895 years, and then he died.</div><div class="p"> 18When Jared had lived 162 years, he became the father of Enoch. 19After he became the father of Enoch, Jared lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 20Altogether, Jared lived a total of 962 years, and then he died.</div><div class="p"> 21When Enoch had lived 65 years, he became the father of Methuselah. 22After he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked faithfully with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters. 23Altogether, Enoch lived a total of 365 years. 24Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.</div><div class="p"> 25When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he became the father of Lamech. 26After he became the father of Lamech, Methuselah lived 782 years and had other sons and daughters. 27Altogether, Methuselah lived a total of 969 years, and then he died.</div><div class="p"> 28When Lamech had lived 182 years, he had a son. 29He named him Noah#5:29 Noah sounds like the Hebrew for comfort. and said, &#8220;He will comfort us in the labor and painful toil of our hands caused by the ground the Lord has cursed.&#8221; 30After Noah was born, Lamech lived 595 years and had other sons and daughters. 31Altogether, Lamech lived a total of 777 years, and then he died.</div><div class="p"> 32After Noah was 500 years old, he became the father of Shem, Ham and Japheth.</div>
