What Does It Mean to Follow Jesus?Sample
Following Jesus means to imitate Him
“Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.” (Ephesians 5:1)
God has done more than reveal Himself in the Bible, telling us Who He is and what His will for our lives is. Most of all, He revealed Himself in the Son, Jesus Christ. He is “the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of His nature” (Hebrews 1:3).
Jesus never committed any sin. He lived a perfectly righteous life. He showed what it looks like to live according to God’s will. Therefore, we are called to imitate Him. He cared for the sick and the outcast. So should we. He was humble and loving. So should we be. Of course, we can’t know in detail for every single situation in our lives what Jesus would do if He was in this situation. But He has set a clear example in general. In Matthew 11:29, He says: “Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart”. The gospel of John stresses that God is love. Jesus showed perfect love for humans. And He tells His disciples, “By this all people will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35).
Following Jesus means becoming more and more like Him. When other people watch your life, can they see you are a Christian?
About this Plan
“I have decided to follow Jesus…”, a well-known Christian hymn sings. Jesus Himself says, “Whoever does not take his cross and follow Me is not worthy of Me” (Matthew 10:38). But what does this phrase mean? How can we follow Jesus? What are the costs and what are the benefits of doing so? This reading plan helps you to answer these questions, and more.
