DAY 2 OF 5

Elisha and his servant were in a city, surrounded by the army of Israel’s enemy, Syria. During a battle against Israel, the Syrian king wanted to capture Elisha because Elisha’s prophetic gift had enabled him to tell the king of Israel what the Syrians’ next move would be (v.2 Kings 6:9). Understandably, this ability to anticipate the Syrians’ attacks frustrated the Syrian king, so he decided to capture Elisha (vv. 12–13). Elisha’s servant woke up one morning and realized he and Elisha were surrounded by the Syrian army, along with its horses and chariots (v. 15).

To the natural eye, Elisha seemed doomed. His servant thought they would both be killed, but Elisha prayed to the Lord, “Open his eyes that he may see” (v. 17). Immediately the Lord revealed to the young man the angelic hosts surrounding them. Then God blinded the entire Syrian army, and Elisha led them into the city of Samaria where they were given food and sent back to their own country. The amazing thing is that during this time, Syria never attacked Israel again (vv. 18–23).

The most important part of this story is that Elisha and his servant understood the simplicity of believing God and trusting that He knows best. As long as they submitted to God, everything went according to God’s plan. When the people involved decided that God’s plan of success was far better than any plan of failure the devil had, God’s plan took over. When we are willing to trust God with the drama in our lives, we can open the door for God to operate His plan of redemption called total recovery. . . .

God wants our confidence to be our fearlessness, our boldness, and our assurance in God. He promised the recompense of reward. The “great reward” of our confidence and faith means He will compensate us for or return to us what is rightfully ours.

Prayer

Lord, I want to have the steadfast courage and fearlessness of Elisha and other biblical heroes. Please help me to stand firm on Your word and to trust You in all things. Amen.
