Parenting With Grace

DAY 11 OF 11

Having the Grace to Let Go

In a world that seems to daily descend ever deeper into evil, parents may feel an urge to hold tightly to their children. It is natural for us to want to protect them from sin and its influence. But in a grace-filled home, parents know that God’s grace extends beyond their physical control. The grace to let go is how we exhibit our faith in His goodness; we give our children back to the Lord who gave them to us, entrusting them to Him to mature their faith.

God promises to teach our children Himself. This doesn’t undermine our endeavor as parents by any means. What the Lord is really saying is that He will have His way to the hearts of our little ones and not-so-little ones. His loving touch will transform our efforts and make them powerful and effective.

Parents teach truth, model grace, and love unconditionally, but it is God who tests and proves our children’s faith. His purifying and refining process is necessary for them to go on to spiritual maturity. As James 1:3–4 says, “the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” Isn’t that the goal of every Christian parent? We demonstrate faith in our gracious God by having the grace to let go and trust Him to complete the good work that He has started.

God gave marriage as a picture of His undying love for us. He is our Heavenly Bridegroom and we, the church, are His bride. Marriage is sacred, as it is God’s gift to humankind to reflect His love. In the same way, He gave us family, and in our families, we model God’s grace as we learn to serve one another with a heart of gratitude for the One who loves us most of all.
