My Yoke Fits Perfectly

“Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke fits perfectly, and the burden I give you is light.” Matthew 11: 29-30

Jesus, it is difficult to understand what You mean when You say that I am to take Your yoke upon myself. I don’t understand how any yoke could fit me perfectly. Nor how the burden You give me could be light. Jesus, I often feel the weight of many yokes and want more than anything to be untethered and free from them. The burdens I so often carry are anything but light, and I want to lay them down and escape to find contentment, peace, and rest. Jesus, please teach me.

Your humility and gentleness call to me. As I turn towards You, Your kind eyes beckon me to come to You. You see the hole in my heart and mercifully remind me that I am safe and sheltered. You patiently allure and draw me to Yourself. As I come to You, I am comforted and assured of Your constant love for me. Your love gave up Your life for me. My soul knows Your love, and it draws me. I reach out for Your rescuing hand and hold it tight. And my eyes and heart are awakened, and I hear You saying My yoke is not like any other, it frees rather than binds, it releases and does not oppress. It says I love you as you are and you need not strive to earn it. It covers your guilt and shame and breaks your chains. It unites and holds rather than shackles. It says I want you to be in and with Me always. It gently leads and guides and does not pull or force. It frees you from everything else you are enslaved to. It invites surrender and does not demand it. It says I am for you; I know your needs, and I will supply every one. As you take My yoke upon you, I will bear the load. It gently whispers that in surrendering your life, you will gain life in all its fullness for eternity. It says, take my yoke upon you because I want to be with you always. Take my yoke because I never want to be apart from you. Take my yoke upon you because you are my beloved.

Jesus, as You teach us and as we listen, we understand. You are the great I Am, Emmanuel, our Saviour, and our Friend. You don’t just call us to something, but You call us to Yourself. We are drawn to desire unity with You, so we will remain in Your steadfast love. Jesus, You teach us that in dying to ourselves and surrendering to You, we find all we need and ever wanted.

I am overwhelmed by Your grace and great love for me, that You would come after me until You find me, restores my soul. As You call my name, I am loved. I turn and run into Your arms, surrendering myself to You. I take Your yoke upon me, and we are one. I have peace, and I am free. Your yoke fits me perfectly. I find rest for my soul in Your glorious love.
