Expect the Unexpected
Look back on your time in ministry. What was the most significant outcome? Was it drawn out in a plan? Maybe a new building was planned, or one new initiative. But did you prepare for that key new employee who has made all the difference? Did you plan for the successes you most talk about with donors today? Did a new vital ministry area emerge because you planned it from scratch months or years in advance, or did unexpected opportunities open those doors? The world expects leaders to be focused, to have bold, comprehensive, plans that set a new direction. But the kingdom work is not even close to what the world expects.
From the very beginning, Jesus demonstrated that kingdom work was different—not just a little bit different, but different. Kingdom work was going to make it possible that “valleys will be filled, and the mountains and hills made level. The curves will be straightened, and the rough places made smooth." Throughout His public ministry, Jesus made it clear that what you expect or plan is not what will be.
Traditional leaders are expected to control the environment around them and the actions of the team executing the plan. In contrast, when we rely on Christ for our direction, we must hold our plans loosely because so much remains uncertain while we wait for Him to reveal the path forward.
The Lord won’t deliver every new opportunity to your doorstep in a package as if ordered online. He will use the inspiration, wisdom, intuition, and experience of you and others to reveal His direction. He will use unexpected conversations, new friendships, and “chance” encounters, along with changing circumstances. All of these could trigger surprises you never imagined.
Reflection
What unexpected opportunities has God given you that you may be missing because you're relying on your plans for direction?
