Through the Bible: AmosSample
God Will Cause The Good Times in Israel to End
The Lord God has sworn by himself, declares the Lord, the God of hosts: “I abhor the pride of Jacob and hate his strongholds, and I will deliver up the city and all that is in it.”
Amos 6:8 (ESV)
Amos 4 started with Amos sarcastically encouraging Israelites about their sacrifice, how they are not giving wholeheartedly and not being a good neighbour to the poor. We see how there is a continuous reminder of who God is, and the covenant they have with God throughout chapter 5. In chapter 6, God speaks to them through Amos explaining how He will bring the city down, as God hates their pride. They are prideful, worshipping and acting in their own ways, forgetting God’s commandments. Do we live in a similar manner, saying we are Christ followers but just in name, or are we mindful of how we act and live like one as God asked us to?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, may we learn from the book of Amos, to reflect on our own behaviour and acts. If we acted against You, we repent; may we not hold on to our pride. We choose only to be proud of You and Your teaching, Lord. May we live in a way reflecting Your goodness, be good neighbours to the poor, act righteously according to Your law. We thank You for this reminder and pray in Your mighty name, Amen.
About this Plan
God sent Amos, a southern peasant, to prophesy to the prosperous yet unscrupulous northern kingdom. Instead of being God’s chosen people to bless others, Israel embraced injustice, hypocrisy, and materialism. As a result of God’s judgment, the nation perished during the Assyrian invasion in the late 8th century. The book’s message is straightforward: Christians are chosen not only for the privilege but also for the responsibility to bless the needy.
