DAY 5 OF 7

What Is Your Motive?

Jesus looked around and saw John’s two disciples following him. He asked them, “What do you want? What’s your deal? Why are you following me? What are your motives?”

At church, we’re studying the Gospel; we talk about Jesus. I’m here because I’m a follower of Jesus Christ. He’s my Lord, and I’m very narrow-minded about that. But, why are you here? Why do you go to church? Is it because you’re in AA or your rehab group brought you? Is it because your mom and dad brought you, because, to live in their house, you just have to put in the time? Are you here because you did some crazy things in your life and now you’re reaping what you sowed? Maybe you’re thinking, “I’ll go to church, do devotions, and put my time in. I’m going to rub the Jesus genie bottle, ask Him to help me, and then I’ll go back and continue living the way I was living.” What is your motive? That’s what Jesus asked. “What are your motives, guys?”

They replied, “Rabbi,” meaning teacher, “Where are you staying?” They gave Jesus the right answer. As disciples, they said, “We know you’re the Son of God. You’re the Messiah. Where are you posted up?” And Jesus says, “Come and see.” These guys had no idea what they were about to see. It was about four in the afternoon; they went with Him to the place where He was staying and remained with Him for the rest of the day. They came, they saw, they experienced. They were with the God of the universe, sitting, hanging out, talking with the One who created everything. What did they talk about? Imagine the words and the wisdom! Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Can you imagine being posted up with Jesus Christ, the God of the universe, having a conversation, seeing and hearing what they heard? They’re like, “We’re chilling! We’re not going anywhere.” They remained.

That’s what happens to us when we take the time to read the Word of God. When we start praying. When we listen to Bible studies on the way to work. When we spend time to be with God, we experience Him; we feel His presence and He speaks to us. If you don’t put yourself in that situation, you’re not going to remain with God.
