What a Beautiful NameSample
Jesus shared many meals with His disciples and the last meal Jesus would share with His disciples before He went to the cross was special, not just because it was the last, but because they were sharing a Passover meal.
The Passover meal is shared to remember when God's people were freed from slavery in Egypt. The book of Exodus tells the story of Moses going to Pharoah asking him to let God's people go. The Pharoah wouldn't budge, so God sent a series of terrible plagues. There were frogs, lice, gnats, boils, hail, locusts but the worst of all was that the first-born son in each family would die.
To protect the Israelites from this plague God told them to paint on their doors with lamb's blood. Then when the angel of death came, their homes would be passed over. They were also told to prepare some unleavened bread, which is bread made without yeast, to have ready to take with them when they escape Egypt.
In the Passover meal, Jewish people share wine to represent the blood that was painted over the doors and unleavened bread to represent God providing for the Israelites when they escaped Egypt. When Jesus shared the Passover meal the night before He would go to the cross, He gave new meaning to what the wine and bread would represent.
Like the Passover meal is shared to remember God delivering His people from slavery in Egypt we share the bread and cup to remember Jesus delivering us from sin.
