Refuel, Reframe, Recalibrate: A 7-Day Devotional for Business ExecutivesSample
Serving All People
The call to service is a foundational calling of the Christ-like life. Jesus is the prime example––the God who became the servant of all. What does this mean for us who live in the corporate world? Does it mean that we should serve our customers above and beyond the bare minimum? Does it mean that we should be concerned about how we affect the environment and communities that we operate in? Does it mean we should have a good CSR program? It means all of the above... and more.
Here's the rub: Jesus didn't give for what He could get in return. You're probably thinking, "Now this guy has gone too far. This is a business, not a church! We are all about ROI and value for money!" I know, I know, but Jesus said that there are no accolades for His disciples who only give to those who can return the favour. Even non-believers do that.
I believe that the current trend toward sustainability in the corporate world (where businesses are beginning to take responsibility for their economic, social, and environmental impacts on society) is nothing less than a move of God. As believers, we should be at the forefront of this movement.
However, on a more personal level, as we steward our net effect on society, we should always carry in our hearts genuine care and compassion for others. The minute it becomes more about the branding strategy or the tax benefits or the reputational risk than the people we serve, is the minute we are no longer embodying Christ to the world. We are ambassadors of Christ first and businesspeople second.
Lamb of God, Son of Man, Saviour of the World, You gave Your life that we might have eternal life. You disrobed Your glory and took the form of a slave. You became the servant of all that we might become kings in Your Kingdom. Help me, Jesus, to follow Your example. Help me to serve my fellow men and women well. Help me to give, not seeking a return, but freely with a cheerful heart. Give me the humility and compassion to love others as You have loved me. Amen.
