Beginner's Guide to Fasting

DAY 5 OF 7

Preparing beforehand for a fast is important, but on a more practical note, let’s discuss how to choose the correct type of fast and the length of fast suitable for your lifestyle.

When making a decision, consider your health condition and daily routine. Carefully consider the number of days you’ll fast if you are on medication. If you are on prescriptions, please ask a doctor before beginning a fast of more than a full day, as it can lead to potential issues in your health.

The type of fast you choose is up to you. You can go on a full fast and drink only liquids, or you may desire to fast like Daniel by drinking water and refraining from any pleasurable foods.

Remember, part of the purpose of a fast is to set time aside to be in the presence of God. Take time to pray, worship, study His Word, and nourish your relationship with Him.

You may fast as long as you’d like. Most people can easily fast from one to three days, but you may feel the grace to go longer – even as much as 21 to 40 days.

Use wisdom and pray for guidance. If you have never fasted, start slow.

Remember, what you choose to give up is not as important as the heart with which you do it.

Today’s Prayer:

Father, guide me in deciding what type of fast to do and for what length. Give me wisdom because I want to follow your Son’s example.

About this Plan

Beginner's Guide to Fasting

The practice of fasting is prevalent in the Scriptures. We see throughout the Bible this concept was practiced by kings, prophets, and all of God’s people to this day. As you fast, you’ll notice it will help increase your humility, your hunger, and your holiness as you are formed into the image of Christ.
