A WOMAN OF DEVOTION

As we read about the Proverbs 31 woman, we learn about all the qualities that make her who she is, but as we get to the end of the text, we learn the key virtue that makes all the other virtues possible. In Proverbs 31:30, we read:

“Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” (Proverbs 31:30)

She’s not praised because she is giving, a good businesswoman, or how well she takes care of her home. She’s praised because she is first devoted to God. All of her virtuous qualities are founded on her devotion to the Lord. God must be our foundation if we want to be women who cultivate lives of strength and legacy like the Proverbs 31 woman. I know you may be wondering, what does that mean, and how can we live lives devoted to God in such a fallen world? To answer these questions, let’s look at Jeremiah 17:7-8 that reads:

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose trust is the LORD. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.” (Jeremiah 17:7-8 ESV)

We’re constantly tempted to trust in our bank account, our status, titles, how we look, or how much power or control we have. What strikes me about the Proverbs 31 woman is that she had these things, yet her trust was not in them.

She feared the Lord, which means she honored and reverenced Him. She trusted Him. Her devotion to God served as the seed of faith to grow a life we are all inspired by today. May your devotion to God do the same as you trust in Him each day to live the life He's so graciously called you to because just like the Proverbs 31 woman, we can't live that life apart from Him.
