(Un)Natural Mom

DAY 7 OF 7

Called Mom

Typically, our idea of the perfect mother is a collection of requirements handed down by people around us. Some of these ideas may be close to God’s, but many are mere cultural tapestries thick with dust and myths. Unraveling these to test each idea against God’s Word is worthwhile. This is tricky, of course. It is a journey each mother should embark upon with wise women to guide her as she prays and asks God for answers to this first question.

In regard to the question of “Who first called us by the name Mom,” we are mistaken if we think that our first calling comes from society or our children. It was not when others congratulated you on your baby’s birth that you were first called a mother. It wasn’t when your own child said Mama for the first time either. Our first calling came from God Himself. When He allowed you to conceive a child, whether in your own body or not, He called you Mom, long before anybody knew.

Only the One who calls us by name has the right to tell us how we should be. The beauty is that He does not tell us without enabling us as well. He doesn’t demand what we don’t have. And we always have enough by virtue of His free gifts.

The Bible tells many birth stories in which God is an active participant who speaks and guides. He gives names and special callings for the children, and special duties and instructions to the parents. He even tells the mothers secrets about the future that He wants them to keep in mind as they raise their children.

Read the stories of Hagar (Gen. 16:21), Rebekah (Gen. 25:21-23), Hannah (1 Sam. 1-2), Elizabeth (Luke 1), and Mary (Luke 1:26-38) for examples of this. We don’t have a record of God’s words to Hannah, but her inspiration to dedicate her son to God’s temple clearly came from Him. Elizabeth probably received her parenting instructions from her husband, Zechariah, who in turn received many details about their son’s future and upbringing from an angel (Luke 1:13-20).

God called these (un)Natural Moms to (super)Natural Motherhood. This is a call to trust that God has not made a mistake in choosing you to be the mother to your children. When we answer this call, we agree that God has a magnificent destiny for our families. When we answer the call, we say yes to a journey that may be tough at times.
