5 Gifts Jesus Secured on the Cross by David MathisSample
Gift 1: Propitiation
To Remove God’s Righteous Wrath
Romans 3:25 says Jesus is the one whom “God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith.” Because God is just, the sins of his people are no small obstacle. In his justice, he cannot sweep our sins—which are acts of cosmic treason against him—under the rug of the universe. There must be “propitiation,” the appeasement of his righteous anger against sin.
In his love, God devised a way to satisfy justice and still triumph with mercy.
God himself, in the person of His own Son, took on human flesh and blood and offered himself in the place of sinners. The Son received the just wrath of God and paid our penalty in his death, that we might live. His blood propitiated God’s righteous wrath, upheld divine justice, and opened to us—to all who receive this by faith—the floodgates of his mercy.
Prayer
Are there any sins in your life that seem too big for Christ to overcome? Take the time to pause, repent, and receive God’s mercy.
