The Importance of Prayer: Approaching the Throne of Grace

DAY 3 OF 42

Revere God and His Wisdom

Read: Jeremiah 10:6–7

SOAP: Jeremiah 10:6–7

There is no one like you, LORD.

You are great,

and you are renowned for your power.

Everyone should revere you, O King of all nations,

because you deserve to be revered.

For there is no one like you

among any of the wise people of the nations nor among any of their kings.

Into the text

Jeremiah the prophet wrote this passage to contrast the greatness of God over all idols. His words reminded the nation of Judah, who had turned from God, that their God, the Lord alone, was worthy of praise.

We serve a powerful God beyond all measure, who gives life and breath to all things, is seated in the heavens, and is active in our lives. Our Lord is worthy of our praise, communication, acknowledgment, and love. When we think about the things in our lives that we speak about, brag about, or take pride in, our Lord should be at the top of the list. No one and nothing has the power of our God.

As we approach God in prayer, we must understand who He is. Yes, He can do more than we can ask for and beyond what we can imagine, but He is also the great and powerful King. He is holy, mighty, and worthy of praise. As we seek God in prayer, our hearts must have a posture of reverence to Him. He is not a machine that gives us what we want whenever we ask. He has a perfect plan for our lives and the world. God is beyond understanding, and His ways are higher and better than ours.

What in your life is competing for your attention, devotion, praise, and love? What or who have you placed higher than God? How will you begin today to elevate God back to His rightful place in your life? As you go to God in prayer today, take time to praise Him for His holiness, His greatness, His power, and His majesty.

Prayer

Father God, Your love for me stretches to the heavens and extends above the clouds. Yet, there are days when I barely acknowledge You. Lord, forgive me when I forget Your power, Your majesty, and Your faithful action in my life. Lord, give me the courage and boldness to speak and boast of Your great work in my life. Remind me daily, Lord, that everything and every person I place above You will fail me, but You never will. In Jesus’ name, amen.
