Commit to Wait Expectantly

Read: Psalm 5; Proverbs 8:17

LORD, in the morning you will hear me;

in the morning I will present my case to you and then wait expectantly for an answer.

In this heartfelt Psalm, David offered a prayer to the Lord. He pleaded with God to hear his complaint and pay attention to him. He asked God to hear him in the morning as he woke and immediately pleaded his case before the Lord. Then, David waited expectantly for an answer.

This psalm gives us a pattern and a guide for prayer. David prayed immediately after waking up. As God wakes us each day, we can offer Him our thanks, our devotion, and our love. We also have the privilege of laying our case before the Lord every day. He cares about us and will lead and guide us as we go about our day. We can worship Him by laying our cares and concerns before Him as well as our gratitude and our praise.

Like David, Jesus also lived this way. In the Gospels, we often see Jesus getting up early in the morning to spend time with God. He went to His Father before anything else had the chance to distract Him. We, too, can go to God, praying to Him and seeking Him for direction early in the morning.

When we are desperate for the Lord to intervene in our lives, we find time to pray and seek Him. But when we find ourselves in the daily pattern of life, it is not always our first instinct. May a pattern of immediate prayer and praise be something that marks our lives, no matter our circumstances.

Prayer

Father God, I thank You that Your mercies are new every morning. Lord, lead and guide my day. Keep me focused on letting my light shine on all those who need to know and experience Your love. I pray for an outpouring of Your peace and love in my life and the lives of those around me each day. In Jesus’ name, amen.
