Applause
Kerry O’Neill
READY
“Jesus was in the center of the procession, and the people all around him were shouting, ‘Praise God.’” — Matthew 21:9
SET
Jesus riding on a donkey into Jerusalem is known as His Triumphal Entry. It was like a parade for a world champion athlete. Corrie ten Boom ponders the scene from the donkey’s perspective: “Everyone was waving palm branches and throwing garments on the road and singing praises, do you think that for one moment it even entered the head of that donkey that any of it was for him?”
While it is a humorous thought, there is a great parallel for Christ-followers athletes and coaches. Like that donkey, you carry the message and presence of Christ. Applause can be insidious as it tempts us to forget that the cheers are for the creature rather than the Creator, the gifted rather than the Giver of Gifts, and the ambassador rather than the King.
After a victory, some coaches and athletes may say to a reporter: “It wasn’t me out there; it was God.” It is not a matter of denying reality but more an attitude of the heart, not allowing the cheers to become too intoxicating. I have found it helpful to have some go-to mantras to repeat in your heart, such as God, thank You for health. I praise You, Lord. All glory to You, Jesus.
It is important to remember we are never as good as some people think we are nor as bad as others think we are. May we not be swayed by either cheers or jeers.
GO
- How can you make sports an expression of joy and gratitude to God?
- Is your sports experience a means of worshipping Christ?
- What are some ways that a cheering crowd can be a reminder of giving God the glory He is due?
