Through the Bible: LamentationsSample

God’s Mercy and Compassion – New Every Morning
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning, great is your faithfulness.
Lamentations 3:22-23 (ESV)
The Book of Lamentations is a tearful description of the funeral of Jerusalem. Once a proud and beautiful city, it was reduced to rubble by the invading Babylonians. Jeremiah wrote his lament in such a literary fashion that in the middle of his book, he paused and declared the mercy and faithfulness of God. Jeremiah wanted the Israelites to realise that while they cannot escape persecution and suffering, God’s mercy and faithfulness will keep them THROUGH judgment.
God’s mercy (“racham” in Hebrew) means compassion, kindness, and tender love. It is God’s mercy that moves Him to give us His Only Son as the atonement for our sin. God continues to show mercy in forgiveness and His mercy triumphs over judgment. God’s mercies are “new every morning” meaning that they are perpetual and always available to those in need. We do not need to feel condemned of our past sins for He has “removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west” (Ps. 103: 12).
Today is a new day and the mercy of God is fresh and new again.
Prayer
Our Heavenly Father, I praise and thank You for Your loving-kindness and mercy which is new every morning and remains steadfast and sure throughout the day. In Jesus' name, Amen.

About this Plan

Lamentation is a collection of five separate despairing poems written by the Prophet Jeremiah about the destruction of the once proud Jerusalem in 586 BC. Although Jeremiah laments for the desolation, he understands that this is a consequence of the sins of people. But amidst such sorrow and hopelessness, Jeremiah reminds the readers, “The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases and his mercies never come to an end.”
