Love Remains | A 13-Day Devotional By Hillary ScottSample
“Still”
Psalm 46 opens with a description of troubling times: “…the earth be removed…the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea…its waters roar and be troubled…the mountains shake with its swelling.” It’s a poetic take on those times in life that are shaky and hard, scary and unknown. Whether it’s a diagnosis or a divorce or a disappointment, the times when the waters roar are difficult, and oftentimes our reaction, as humans, is to try and control what’s going on around us.
I believe that you are God alone
But sometimes I still try to take control
‘Cause I get scared when I can’t see the end
And all you want from me is to let go
We grasp for direction or meaning in our hard times and try desperately to get out or make things better. But when we read farther into Psalm 46, we see a God who does not need us to control or fix anything. We see a God who is powerful and able as much as He is attentive and caring. “Be still, and know that I am God,” the Psalm says, “I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth!” (Psalm 46:10)
You’re moving mountains that I don’t even see
You’ve answered my prayer before I even speak
All you need for me to be, is still
In the face of our fear, it is easy to forget who God is. That He is the One who will be exalted in all the earth. That He created the earth. That He created you and is intimately involved with the details of your life. Rest in the assurance today that the God of the universe is parting waters for you, making a way where there seems to be no way. He cares, and He is at work. All we have to be, is still.
