Love Remains | A 13-Day Devotional By Hillary ScottSample
Certain hymns withstand the test of time for good reason. “Come Thou Fount” was written in the eighteenth century, but here is the church, hundreds of years later, still singing the same words. Of course the story of the gospel can never get old, and that’s what this hymn does—it reminds us of the basic yet incredible truth of Jesus, echoing Romans: “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom. 5:8).
Jesus sought me when a stranger
Wondering from the fold of God
He to rescue me from danger
Interposed His precious blood
Jesus’ intervention in our lives is the single most important thing that will ever happen to us, but the reality of his grace doesn’t have to be a one-time event. Grace is something than can filter into every area of our lives and every step we take if we let it. Perhaps this is what the songwriter meant when he wrote, Tune my heart to sing thy grace.
What would it look like to have a heart tuned to grace? What would our conversations be like? How would we treat others? How would we treat ourselves? How would we approach our work, our families, our church?
Grace is what sets the Christ follower apart. It’s what gives us the ability to accept and love others because we know how far we’ve strayed and how much God loves us still. Let us strive to be debtors of grace, daily constrained to it because it has set us free.
