DAY 7 OF 14

Magi

Though our Nativity sets depict a beautiful scene of the events surrounding the birth of Christ, these events did not happen on a single night. The shepherds were there on the holiest of nights, but the wise men would not arrive for a while longer. When they did arrive, there weren’t just three of them, but many—dignitaries, philosophers, magicians, and astrologers who traveled from far away places. They set out with their entourages—servants, animals, supplies, tents, and luxuries befitting the travels of wealthy men.

These men were called magi. They studied the stars, interpreted dreams, and practiced arts that were considered sinful to the Jews. They worshipped other gods and held different beliefs and traditions than the people of Israel.

Likely, it was quite the spectacle to see this caravan travel across the lands. Isaiah prophesied about this event as well in Isaiah 60:6: “Herds of camels will cover your land, young camels of Midian and Ephah. And all from Sheba will come, bearing gold and incense and proclaiming the praise of the Lord.” And so they went to Jerusalem where King Herod sat on the throne.

Expecting a baby, the magi inquired, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?” (Matthew 2:2) King Herod, greatly disturbed by the rumor of a king who would claim his throne, sent the magi on to Bethlehem where the prophecies foretold of this birth.

The magi followed the path of the star that led them to a house in the little town where the family stayed. And there before the child, the unlikeliest men bowed down in worship.

These wise men presented gifts suited for a king: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Joseph and Mary had likely never beheld such riches or been in the presence of such wealthy, high-ranking men—all for the honor and glory of the King of the Jews.
