Quest 52

DAY 5 OF 5

What Does Jesus Expect Me to Do?

When Jesus arrived on our planet, his name was Immanuel, “God with us” (Matthew 1:23). When he left the earth, he promised to be with us to the end of the age (Matthew 28:20). He has accomplished that by sending his Holy Spirit to guide us. The Spirit in us is every bit as present, instructive, convicting, and inspiring as Jesus was to his disciples. What that means is that we are still apprentices of the Spirit as we lead novices to begin their own journey of discipleship. If you want to make someone a disciple of Jesus, the Spirit will be a present and practical guide, providing everything you need to accomplish this task. Having said that, here are some things you can do today to mentor an apprentice of Jesus:

  • Start with family. Most people who make a disciple start with a family member. Because your family sees your behavior more than anyone else, radical loyalty to Jesus and sacrificial love for others can be compelling within your home.
  • Share a meal. Meals are spiritual. If you want to lead someone to Christ, invite that person to dinner. Your home is the best place (if possible) because he gets to see how you live. This is not a bait and switch to corner him for evangelism. You really are just trying to get to know him. Come up with three questions you want to ask to get to know more about him personally. These questions may even give you an opportunity to share your own story.
  • Invite to church. After you have had someone over for a meal or gone to some social events with her, invite her to another meal, after church. Your invite can sound something like this: “There’s a group of us going out to eat after church. Would you like to join us?” Most people will say no the first time. Statistically, one in three will say yes, but it may take three invites before a person’s schedule is clear.

Remember that evangelism should always be a team sport. The more people your friend knows and respects who follow Christ, the easier it will be for him to make Jesus Lord.

Who was most influential in leading you to Jesus? What did that person do?
