The Jesus I Know 10-Day Devotional

DAY 4 OF 10

A Mother’s Prayers for Justin Bieber: A Conversation with Pattie Mallette

Kathie Lee

Pattie Mallette is best known for being Justin Bieber’s mother. She has lived a lot of life for a woman who gave birth to Justin when she was practically a child herself. This is Pattie’s story with Jesus.

Pattie

I was eighteen when I got pregnant with Justin. I had just given my life to God six months earlier. I was in the hospital for trying to commit suicide, and I encountered God there. I started really trying to get to know God, really learning about Him, going to church, growing in my faith. And I decided to let all my old friends know about God. The next thing you know, I was back in my old ways, and I found myself high and drunk and pregnant.

I was so ashamed to come back to a church as an unwed mom, but they loved me and taught me about the mercy of God and the forgiveness of Jesus. I knew when I got pregnant it wasn’t okay for me to have an abortion. Though I was not prepared, I decided to trust God and go ahead and give birth to my son and try the best I could to raise him.

Kathie Lee

So this little angel boy comes into your life. Do you have a sense of everything you went through in bringing this young man into the world was meant to be to bring forth the greater good?

Pattie

I do believe God uses everything the enemy means for evil and turns it around for good. In God’s incredible mercy, He made Justin perfect and beautiful. He was very gifted in rhythm, so even in his high chair, he would bang to the beat to copy drum riffs. By the time he was two, he was playing a 4/4 beat with music on a drum set.

In the meantime, I was growing as a Christian and battling my former demons. This is a journey, and God’s mercies are new every morning, gratefully. He works in us according to His good pleasure, so we’re being transformed into His image. He’s doing the work. We just have to surrender and say yes, and He does the rest.

Kathie Lee

You raised Justin to love Jesus; you instilled in him the knowledge of his Savior. When he rebelled and was seduced by the industry, what were your fears for him then?

Pattie

I asked God to love him through me. I continue to bring Justin before Him and pray for His will to be done in his life. It was really scary when he was struggling with addiction. It’s tough letting your children make their own mistakes. Justin has free will, but he has chosen to make Jesus Lord and Savior, and God is gonna be the one to reveal to him the truth.

Kathie Lee

And what are your hopes for the future?

Pattie

I’ve been healing up from my past and the whirlwind of Justin Bieber Land, and I think now He’s preparing me for my next season and calling me forward. I know that if the world hated Jesus, then they’re going to hate us, too, who represent Him—who tell the truth in the hopes that some would come to know the mercy and the truth of who God is for eternity.

Respond

How has God met you during low points in your life?

Who in your life does God want to love through you?

What hopes do you have for God to use your life in the future?

Prayer

You are the God of second chances. You are the one who has the power to bring good out of what our enemy intends for evil. Help me to bring Your love to this hurting world by sharing Your grace, mercy, and truth. Amen.
