Anticipating Christmas: A 5-Day Advent Plan

DAY 3 OF 5

The Promise of Peace

But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” Luke 2:10-11 NIV

In the four short chapters of the Bible that tell the Christmas story, “do not be afraid” is mentioned five times.

The time surrounding Jesus’ birth was anything but peaceful. There was tension in Mary and Joseph’s relationship. There was political unrest. There was a broken world in desperate need of a Savior. Sound familiar?

The birth of Jesus was one of the most important steps in God’s plan to redeem the world. Jesus’ arrival was a beacon. It was a beginning born out of what looked like a bleak, desperate ending.

God sent us His Son because He wants us to experience His perfect peace. Right now, pause and think about an area in your life where you can ask God to calm your heart, just as He did for Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds all those years ago.

A Prayer for Peace:

God,

Thank You for sending us Your Son, the Prince of Peace.

Please guard my heart and mind with Your peace this Christmas. You know the things that have been weighing me down with worry, anxiety, or fear.

Help me fix my mind on You, and help me to acknowledge the tangible presence of Your love.

Thank You for caring for me, and for fighting my battles alongside me. You never give me a spirit of fear, but instead You bring life and peace.

Help me to lay my fears before You and trust You with all my heart this season.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

About this Plan

Anticipating Christmas: A 5-Day Advent Plan

So often, the holidays come and go before we have a chance to focus on preparing our hearts for Christmas. Advent is our way of remembering that God came to be with us, is still with us, and will come again. Over the next 5 days, we’ll examine the four Advent themes: hope, peace, love, and joy.
