DAY 3 OF 4

Encouragement. It not only changes those who hear it, but it also changes those who choose to speak it.

Everyone needs encouragement. No matter your age, encouraging words are often needed to make it through a long day or a rough situation. Proverbs 16:24 says, “Gracious words are like honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.” Let’s be real: everyone could use a bit more “sweetness” for their soul.

So how can you be an encourager? Try these out:

1. Pray for someone - even better, pray with them.

I know. I started with a hard one. Don’t just tell someone, “Hey, I’ll pray for you” and walk off. Stop and pray with them. Now, there’s nothing wrong with praying for someone (please, do it), but praying with someone is a game-changer. It’s often a humbling experience and just what is needed. You can do it! Then, go back and check with whomever you prayed for, and continue to pray.

2. Share how you see God working in their life.

It’s always encouraging to know someone sees Christ in you. If you get stuck on this one, think about the Fruit of the Spirit: Love. Joy. Peace. Patience. Kindness. Goodness. Faithfulness. Gentleness. Self-control. Examples: “Thank you for showing kindness to Sarah when…” “You’re faithfulness has been an example to me, and I appreciate you.”

3. Share an encouraging scripture.

When you reflect on your Bible reading, what scripture is God using to speak to you? Has there been a passage or special scripture that helped you through a tough time? This could be a great opportunity to share a verse in a short conversation or even in a card (this isn’t the time for a short mini-sermon over a passage though…).

4. Speak life.

You have opportunities every day to speak words that build others up. Sometimes it’s just the tone of your voice (yeah, your mom is right). Choose to encourage those around you, so when you pass someone in the hall or leave a room, it’s a more joyful place because you were there!

Your words – whether they are spoken, posted or texted – have great influence. Choose to influence with words of encouragement and pleasantness, knowing you’re not only bringing “sweetness to the soul” of the hearer, but also to your own soul.
